Cars are meant to be driven. Many classic car owners forget about it and close their machines in tightly sealed garages. Fortunately, those are not the ones that take part in the Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix.
Some may think that classic car racing is only a show where the valuable machinery is driven carefully at safe speeds. Not here. If there is a gap, that exists, the drivers will drive into it, no matter what the age of their car is. Just like Ayrton Senna said in his famous quote. From time to time the unavoidable happens and one or the other car can only finish the lap with a little help from a flatbed truck.
The action on the track is not the only attraction for the audience gathered in the Copenhagen’s Bellahøj park. It’s not only interesting to watch the teams work on the tired machines. Local car dealers present the most amazing pieces of their inventory.
How often can you see the whole line-up of the flagship Ferraris? From the 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo up to the LaFerrari! They were also opening the parade on the track. Hard not to mention an amazing collection of rare Aston Martins and a few Le Mans veterans which were not able to keep the slow pace of the parade and passed everyone to feed their radiators with sufficient amounts of cool air.
If the roaring classics couldn’t provide enough entertainment for someone, the Danish Touring Car Championship was there to help. Participants were driving wheel to wheel fighting for every inch of the tarmac.
Walking down the alleys, filled with cars provided by the local classic car clubs, seemed to be a good way to cool down the emotions. However, the quality of the exhibited machinery wasn’t allowing the heart to slow down.
I’ve spent the longest time staring at the stands of the Danish Alfa Romeo and Lancia clubs. But enthusiasts of other brands could also find something for them. There was even an F-16 Fighter displayed!
Copenhagen Historic Grand Prix is not well known worldwide. Besides local drivers only a few crews from Sweden and Germany were visible. This is a mistake. The quality of this event is very high. Two and a half days filled with track action and the chance to deal with the spectacular classics. See you next year!
